The historical City Hall has been reconstructed within only one year true to the original. It was officially opened on September 5th, 1998, by Dr. Berndt Seite, the chief minister of Mecklenburg/West-Pomerania and by Ernst Wellmer, the major of Demmin. In honor of this occasion, a special stamp was used in a special post office.
There already was a City Hall in Gothic style at this place in the 13th century, since Demmin possesses the City charter. The building was transformed and extended several times in its history.
At the end of the 18th century, the building was dilapidated and eventually replaced by a new building in Baroque style. This building was converted for the last time in 1886. It burnt down in May 1945. It was only after 1990 when thanks to the special initiative of the board of the City council and of the City mayor talks about reconstruction of the building true to the original started. Following extensive archaeological excavations in 1997, the construction of the new house could finally be started, connected with the building of an underground car park.
At the official opening of the City Hall, the chief minister has stated: “The new City Hall shows its respect to history through its outer appearance, while inside it is obliged to modern thinking, open towards the citizens. Competence, openness to citizens, participation of citizens and readiness to help are of major importance. We wish that the citizens will enjoy seeking advice here and finding competent advice.” There is nothing more to be said. Come to see our beautiful City Hall, the City and our region and make yourself a picture of the development of the county and Hanseatic City of Demmin in the northeast of Germany. |
